ROMNEY'S KENDAL MINT CAKE & MINT DRINKS
Here at Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake, we understand the importance of championing local business and how collaborations can highlight the good work being done by independent, family run companies in and around the Lake District. Local businesses don't only build a stronger economy — they also build a stronger community. Relationships between small businesses are important in creating a cohesive, welcoming community identity. We have been lucky enough to work with businesses who, like ourselves, have strong historical significance to their local area or who have been set up with the same core beliefs at their heart.
With this in mind we, thought it would be a good idea to bring some attention to the fantastic local businesses we work with, starting off with Mint Drinks.
David Hall created the Mint Drinks Company whilst also running The Punch Bowl pub at Barrows Green. To begin with, the spirit drinks were only available to customers at his bar, until one day when a director from a major drinks company was visiting the area and decided to stay at The Punch Bowl. David took the chance to introduce them to his Kendal Mint Cake Vodka and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with the gentlemen suggesting that he should mass produce and sell the spirit drinks. since then, David has seen sales of his liquors go from strength to strength and provided exposure to his selection of drinks by visiting trade shows up and down the country.
‘Mint Drinks is a Cumbrian family business, creating award winning, small batch, artisan spirit drinks…. all of which are handmade with every single bottle passing through the hands of a family member.’
Currently they produce four different and unique tipples, each inspired by a quintessential Lake District flavour: Kendal Mint Cake Vodka, Herdwick Brambleberry Gin, Sticky Toffee Pudding Rum and Lakes Gingerbread Vodka.
In order to produce their Delicious Kendal Mint Cake Vodka, David melts down Romney’s Brown Kendal Mint Cake and mixes it with Vodka. David explained that they chose to use brown Mint Cake as it produces a nicer looking spirit drinks. Creating the drink is a delicate process, as if measurements are wrong and too much brown Kendal Mint Cake is added, the mixture can begin to grain.
In 2018 Mint Drinks was chosen by Dragons Den star Theo Paphitis to be awarded his Small Business Award and in 2019 the Lakes Gingerbread Vodka won a “Guild of Fine Foods” TWO STAR Great Taste Award!
‘Our drinks are enjoyed by people from all walks of life, from Corrie and Red Dwarfs Craig Charles to HRH The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles – who particularly enjoyed the Kendal Mint Cake Vodka, asking for a second and third shot whilst talking to us…..’
The connections between Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake & Mint Drink’s don’t stop there, as we also use their spirit drinks as the main ingredients for our speciality fudge range. We currently manufacture and sell Kendal Mint Cake fudge, Herdwick Brambleberry Gin fudge & Lakes Gingerbread Vodka fudge.
